Mission Statement:
Our mission is to facilitate growth of Vermont Interfaith Power and Light and promote earth stewardship among the religious communities of Vermont. We will contact various religious groups throughout the state in order to gather information about current stewardship initiatives sponsored by Vermont's faith communities. We will provide faith communities with resources (including GIS maps, contact sheets, and this website) to allow them to become more involved to the level that they deem appropriate and desirable for their congregation.
Project Description:
This project was carried out in the fall of 2004 as part of the Environmental Studies Senior Seminar at Middlebury College, VT. We worked with Vermont Interfaith Power and Light to assess the current involvement of faith communities in stewardship projects in the state of Vermont. We conducted preliminary surveys with 102 religious groups throughout all 14 counties. We then visited 9 of these communities and had in-depth discussions with members and leaders of the congregations concerning their thoughts and involvement in care for Creation and stewardship. Based on these phone interviews and other discussions we analyzed trends and created maps to present our findings.
